Smoother/better tasting than the usual whiskey. The first person to make whiskey in Japan was a guy who'd gone and studied the method in Scotland, so pretty much all Japanese whiskey today comes from that style. Japanese consumers preferred a softer, smoother, less-smokey version, so that's the way their market headed. A lot of folks in Japan take theirs as a highball with club soda, making it even lighter.
