Kara-Tara is a new joint-venture between Rudger van Wyk (2018 Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) and Jose Conde of Stark-Conde Wines. The name “Kara-Tara” refers to a small town near Knysna, located in South Africa, on the Cape South Coast, facing the Indian Ocean. It is the place where winemaker Rudger van Wyk grew up. Translated from the Khoisan, the language from the first people in Southern Africa, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town.

Grapes are sourced from carefully-selected premium vineyards in the Elgin region. After being crushed into small open tanks, the must is cold-soaked for two days. 30% of the wine is fermented with whole clusters. Only French oak is used for aging, 10% of which is new. |
